About Eddie Lee
Eddie Lee is a London based pianist and composer. Eddie specialises in Jazz and studied on the prestigious BMus Jazz course at the Royal Academy of Music.
His music, however, reflects a wide range of influences. The tutorship of top international pianists Gwilym Simcock (ACT) and Kit Downes (ECM) has given him a unique blend of melodic creativity and harmonic dynamism, further cemented by his love of American pianist Brad Mehldau. Similar to Mehldau, Eddie’s influences range from the experimental indie-rock of Radiohead to the classical music of Brahms and Bach, all the while showing a strong relationship with the jazz tradition, which informs Eddie’s versatility and creative vision. |
Eddie’s current project is a 7-piece band that features the very finest of the next generation of jazz and classical musicians. The band uniquely layers violin, cello and saxophone over a sensitive yet explosive rhythm section, all elevated by touching lyrics and soaring vocal lines provided by the incredible Ella Hohnen-Ford.
The ensemble is the perfect vehicle for Eddie’s dynamic musical vision, with narrative-driven compositions framing seamlessly shifting moments of introspective lyricism and daring improvisation. The music also reflects Eddie’s love of literature, with pieces inspired by writers such as Jack Kerouac and TS Eliot.
Previous projects include a contemporary setting of Eliot’s poem, The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock, and a collection of music for string quartet and rhythm section.
In April 2020 Eddie’s composition Dean won the Dankworth Prize for Big Band Composition. The prize was awarded by the Worshipful Company of Musicians.
